Happy Holidays!

Thank you for visiting as we know this is one of the busiest times of the year. As you consider your year-end giving, we would like to assure you that your donation is supporting a cause that makes an immediate difference in our local community.

Since 1998, AALEAD has been the Washington region’s leading resource focused on improving the lives of low-income Asian American students. Because of the positive impact in the community, we were recognized as one of the top non-profit organizations in the Greater DC area by Washingtonian magazine. This year, we were recognized for our management practices as a finalist for the Washington Post’s Excellence in Nonprofit Management Award.

In 2010, thanks to the support we received from our donors, we are proud to highlight the following student achievements:

1) We served over 400 students. Over 98% of our students advanced to the next grade level.

2) Over 89% of our youth improved or maintained their English grades and over 80% of our youth improved or maintained their Math grades.

3) 98% of AALEAD students attended school at least 85% of the time.

4) We provided over 200 hours of service learning opportunities to our students, which benefitted our community and taught our youth about the importance of giving back.

As you can see, your donation enables us to make a real difference in the lives of hundreds of Asian American youth. However, the need has only increased in 2011, while resources have decreased.  Because of our commitment to our youth, we gladly take on this challenge.  But to do so, we need your help. Your support ensures that our youth continue to have opportunities to become future leaders.

Thank you and warmest wishes for the New Year!

Sincerely,

Rosetta Lai

Executive Director

Goodbyes from Masoora!

Hi, I am Masoora (an Atlas corps fellow from Pakistan).  I had worked with Asian American Lead as Girls Leadership Program Coordinator in Washington DC. Today when it’s my last day, it just seems like a dream and I am really sad that I won’t be here physically but I will be certainly here in spirit. I am really blessed to spend all this time with AALEAD staff and students which welcomed me and accepted me in their extended family. I cannot express my gratitude for everything that they have done for me.  AALEAD is indeed one of the best organizations and the way they support students here through different program is just amazing. I have seen students grow and take leadership roles in their schools and community which has motivated me enough to replicate this model in Pakistan.

It has been a year and four months of my fellowship with Asian American Lead and just wondering that time did fly in my case as it just seems like yesterday when I joined AALEAD in September 2009. I remember the initial months in AALEAD when I had no idea of after school programs, youth culture in US, how to build relationships with the high school students and at times when I got over whelmed, I used to think whether I would be able to contribute or complete my one year with AALEAD. But here you go I not only completed one year but extended for four more months.

There have been a lot of good moments be it program time with the students, chats with the staff during lunches, discussions with colleagues, attending other programs at different sites of AALEAD, enjoying different events or playing games with the students, working with the interns and volunteers, extensive summer programs or team meetings etc, I have learnt so much from everyone around and enjoyed my time fully.

I wish AALEAD the very best and look forward to hear great news in future. Below is the link for a short video on my experiences and work with AALEAD.

Hope to meet you all sometime again in life otherwise facebook is a very effective tool to be connected especially if its that far like Pakistan!

Secondary School program (SSP) just had an end of their exciting fall programs for 2010. A lot of new things have been happening like shifting to the new building, new students joining the program, our monthly events etc. Following are some of the highlights from the SSP fall programs during last two months at AALEAD in DC.

The latest event was DC holiday party on December 17th 2010. High school students helped in organizing this party for the elementary school students through their performances and facilitating different work stations including cleaning up at the end of the event.

Students helped in wrapping the gifts (more than hundred) donated by different donors for the elementary school students

Giving a surprise birthday party & farewell  to the Girls Leadership program Coordinator, Masoora

AALEAD SSP Program is thankful to the Art of Living Foundation, DC who organized a free introductory workshop for our high school students to explain about one of their programs for the youth all over the world. YES is a dynamic, holistic program using yoga, meditation, breathing and interactive group processes to reduce stress, increase energy, build confidence and empower students to achieve their best.

AALEAD took few high school students at the annual DC Lights on event where they helped on the registration desk, shared with people about AALEAD & its Secondary school program plus they enjoyed the presentations from different students from after school programs in DC.

Secondary School Program also had different activities on different days like tutoring nights on Mondays where students can get help from our volunteers for their home work, assignments and college preps. An hour of reconnecting youth workshops every Tuesday discussing about different issues concerning the youth from stress management to the suicide prevention. We also had different workshops under the theme of agents of change on every Wednesday and cooking classes every other Thursday prepared and facilitated by the students.

We look forward to the new year and upcoming programs at AALEAD but for now Happy Holidays!

AALEAD held its second Friendraiser event on December 2nd, hosted by Board member Jimmy Lynn at his cozy home in Arlington. Over 20 guests were in attendance to learn about our mission and hear compelling program experiences from our student representative, Kevin Nguyen. Throughout the evening, attendees networked while enjoying wine and delicious hors d’oeurves.

We want to particularly recognize the following guests for showing their generous support:

AALEADership Circle members

Jerry Bouchard

Terry Hsiao

John Tobe

Michael Wong

Additional contributors we’d like to thank

Wilson Chang

Julie Mazzoccoli

We had a wonderful time meeting everyone and thanks again for coming out to learn about AALEAD. Enjoy the photos from the event below:

AALEAD started its Girls leadership program as a pilot project in October 2009 developed by Masoora Ali (an Atlas Corps fellow from Pakistan). The overall objective of the program was to empower the young Asian American females in the area of Washington DC. In order to build and strengthen their leadership skills, we engaged them in various positive activities like workshops on Self esteem, confidence and awareness, inviting different guest speakers and role models from the community, focus group discussions on different gender issues, field trips to different organizations and universities etc. AALEAD provided a safe and healthy environment to the young students so that they can feel comfortable in sharing their issues.

AALEAD invited different stakeholders including students and volunteers to be a part of the celebrations and reflections on December 8th 2010. While celebrating the successes, there were also reflections on different challenges, areas for improvement and future direction of the program.

Below are some of the comments from the students on how the program had an impact on them:

“Girls Leadership program helpedme to learn a lot by meeting new people ” by a student in grade 7th

“I have become more vocal” by a high school student.

“It helped me open up more and prepared me with my speech” another high school student

“We learnt to be more confident about ourselves” by two students in grade 9th

I have realized the importance of team building through different games.

I learnt how to be more social. I still have a way to go but it was a step forward.

The program has been a lot of fun where we had girls time and we could discuss about various problems openly.

“The field trip to Boston motivated me to start applying for the colleges in time” by a high school student

Furthermore,  AALEAD staff also thanked the volunteers, interns and different guest speakers who had contributed a lot  from time to time beacuse the program might not had that much impact without their support.

DC Holiday Party with a lot of smiles

Last December 17th was the DC Holiday party with almost 150 people who joined us for this event.  This is a joint event with the DC Secondary School Program and Elementary After School program.  It was indeed an enjoyable time with the students who participated in the different activities. Our students’ parents who watched their kids performances and A Santa giving gifts to the students.  The best way to describe our holiday party is through the smiles captured during the event.

Smiles as students enjoys the asian food…..

students enjoying the different workstations that the high school students have prepared..

smiles as students having fun times with volunteers and staff…

And of course, smiles as students received their gifts through our generous sponsors this year…..

Happy Holidays and Have a blessed New Year!! – AALEAD Elementary after school program

Over 100 attendees at the MD Holiday Party!

On Saturday December 11, AALEAD had its annual Holiday Party at the Wheaton Recreation Center in Maryland. Over 100 people attended the event including students, parents, mentors, and staff. High School students had prepared for this event by creating their own inspired holiday murals. Students worked together to get these paintings finished and they were spectacular! We also had a number of student performers: Romano Robles – Blair High school, Lisa Thach – Einstein High School, Bruce Yuen – Blair High School, Alana and Elizandra – Loiederman Middle School, and Jenny Ng – Loiederman Middle School. Special thanks to Veshal Masih for being our MC, to our student volunteers, and to our AALEAD students and their families for coming to our Holiday Party. It was a great success!

AALEAD extended its program to one of the middle schools this year in Washington DC. The program was offered to the students in grade 6th during the lunch breaks on every Wednesday from September till December 2010.

The fall program explored about the cultures and facts about different Asian countries with the special emphasis on cultural festivals. We also tried to introduce some games, greetings and food from the particular country that made the lesson plans very interesting and interactive for all the students.

At the end of the fall program, students had a chance to work on a calendar project together where they chose a country and made a title page for each month with different information on that particular country.

We have had very positive response from the students. According to their feedback they have not only enjoyed and learnt during AALEAD programs but emphasized on how it helped them for their geography classes.

AALEAD is thankful for the great support from the school administration especially from Ms. Neil and Ms. Berkey at Deal Alice Middle school.

Thomas Lee-Fall Intern 2010

Hi, my name is Thomas Lee and I have been interning with AALEAD for the past three months. Considering this is my first internship and first time working with a non-profit, interning at AALEAD has been a fresh and enjoyable experience. As an intern, I worked in the Maryland office and volunteered at the after-school program at Eastern Middle School.

Working with the students at Eastern was an eye-opening and fulfilling experience. I have some volunteering and teaching experience but only abroad (I lived abroad in China for some time). I had never worked with American or Asian American middle school students. The students were great. From day one, they quickly grew on me and embraced me as a fellow AALEAD’er. During my time at Eastern, I assisted Maryland MS coordinator and my good friend Edison Park. As an assistant, I led some activities & discussions and helped the students with projects & homework. When Edison’s duties forced him elsewhere, I even led the program for a couple days. I want to thank Kendra Lee and Alex Cena again for coming in on those days to help me lead programs. I know I benefited from working with the students, not just in increasing cultural awareness but also learning about the same topics the students did: human trafficking and homelessness. I also benefited in working with Edison, who helped me develop my leadership skills in the classroom. I hope the students benefitted as much from my presence at Eastern as I did from meeting them.

The other half of my internship I was working in the Maryland office. I shared the space in our small and cozy office with Jonathan Henry, Micah, Duabhav, Edison, and another fall intern, Hyun Jun. It was a fun, learning experience working with such great staff. I got to see how a non-profit works from the inside and took on many relevent duties including preparing for programs, research, and organizing data. In addition to the great amount of work I got done in the office, the staff and I shared some good conversations and laughs.

I just want to say thank you again to the AALEAD DC staff for opening up the office and taking the time to sit down and talk about their various departments and duties. I want to say thank you for the AALEAD Maryland staff for the opportunity to intern out of their office, for welcoming me in and making this internship a great experience. I want to thank the Board and Executive Director of AALEAD for the great work they’re doing in running the organization. Last, but not least, I want to thank the students at Eastern and  other AALEAD students for making AALEAD what it is and accepting me as a fellow AALEAD’er.

Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, and have a Happy New Year!

Nikki Antonio – Fall Intern 2010

The four months that I interned at AALEAD were both extremely gratifying and enjoyable. As an intern I worked with both elementary and high school students, volunteering at Bancroft Elementary and also participating in the Secondary School Programs (SSP).

Working at Bancroft was not as easy as I had imagined it to be. However, my time there was both fulfilling and fun! At Bancroft I aided in everything from one-on-one tutoring to homework help to just playing with the kids.

As for SSP, I worked closely with SSP Coordinator, Alex Cena. Together we came up with ideas on how best to provide academic support for high school seniors during the college application process. From this, AALEAD’s College Prep Program was born. Starting in September I worked closely with a group of DCPS seniors, we covered everything from the college search, SAT/ACT Prep, and college essays.

One of the best parts of interning with AALEAD was forming relationships with students. Getting to know them, hearing about their lives, and having them really open up to you, made this internship more than just a “job.” I had such a great time at AALEAD, I miss will working with such a generous and giving organization. Thank you for the wonderful experience!
