AALEAD’s Elementary School Programs at Bancroft and Thomson have had the opportunity this year to participate in the Be Water Wise DC!” program sponsored by the National Environmental Education Foundation and funded by HSBC. “Be Water Wise DC!” engages K-12 students in projects about protecting and conserving local water resources. AALEAD students at Thomson and Bancroft have spent time this year collecting and analyzing data about their school’s water use and learning about various water conservation issues. They decided last week to celebrate the UN’s 2012 World Water Day by sharing some of what they have learned with their school communities!

At Bancroft AALEAD, students created a series of banners and posters for display around the school. These signs will remind their classmates of the importance of water conservation:

Thomson AALEADers worked together to create a display reminding their classmates to “Be Water Wise” and sharing some water conservation facts and tips:

Students at Thomson also wrote Public Service Announcements which were heard by the entire school throughout the week! These announcements reminded their classmates that water “is an important natural resource, therefore, we need to practice water saving measures at home and at school.” Thomson AALEADers also shared tips for conserving water such as  ”quickly report water leaks you notice at home or at school” and “turn off running water while brushing our teeth and washing dishes.”

Stay tuned for updates on more Water Wise projects from Thomson and Bancroft AALEADers!

Prior to the program, our guests enjoyed an opening reception, featuring delicious authentic dim sum from Hollywood East, drinks, and conversation. Our guests even had the unique opportunity to interact directly with our student ambassadors, who were also current participants of AALEAD’s programs.

The dinner that followed was catered by Meiwah Chinese Restaurant.

Our program began with inspiring words from our Keynote Speaker, Eun Yang, anchor/reporter of NBC4.

The event was hosted by Master of Ceremonies, Becky Lee, Executive Director of Becky’s Fund and 2nd runner-up of Survivor Cook Islands TV series.

The evening then proceeded with the presentation of our Washington LEADer award to international law firm, Latham & Watkins, for its many years of pro-bono legal services.

As a special highlight, our program featured three student speakers, who shared their own personal stories of how AALEAD has been a positive influence in their lives:

Middle School Visits the Capitol!

Last month,  almost 30 AALEADers from the Middle School Program, along with some of our amazing mentors, had the opportunity to take a trip to Washington, D.C. Students participated in a tour and had time to ask questions about the different parts of the building, art work, people and of course, about the government!

This trip came at a perfect time, as Middle School has been learning about the government (a part of our “Get Involved” theme this year!). Special thanks and shout out to Mr. David Cox and Ms. Susan Rohol from Minnesota Senator Al Franken’s office for giving us this wonderful opportunity.

Check out some photos below of our time at the Capitol!

Middle School Plays Laser Tag!

Students from all of AALEAD’s Middle School programs got together on March 17th to play a couple rounds of laser tag at ShadowLand in Gaithersburg, MD.  Students who had shown a high level of enthusiasm and participation in after-school programs were rewarded with this great opportunity to bust out their laser tag skills and have a ton of fun.

Special shout-out to Middle School Coordinator Sharon Choi for her Hunger Games winning attitude.

World Learning at Bancroft and Thomson

World Learning is a great organization which coordinates undergraduate student exchanges through its Global UGRAD program.  Last November, they brought several international students to our DC elementary after-school programs at Bancroft and Thomson Elementary to talk about their home countries in Asia and Central/South America and volunteer with the kids.  Everyone involved had a great time, so we were happy to partner with them for another international student volunteer day.

We had 11 international students come to Thomson Elementary on March 8 to volunteer with our students. After helping them with their homework, the international students gave short presentations about their countries.  Many of the AALEAD students had questions for the volunteers like “what kind of food do you eat?”  They also learned how to say “hello”, “goodbye” and “thank-you” from some of the volunteers.

On March 15, a separate group of 6 international students visited Bancroft Elementary.  As soon as they arrived at the school, our students were excited to see them and play with them.  After a quick game of kickball at recess, they settled down to homework with the help of the volunteers.

Once the students were finished with their homework, they got to learn more about the volunteers and their home countries.

All of AALEAD’s students had a great time with the World Learning volunteers.  Thank you World Learning for bringing your students to our programs!

FOCUS Dance Workshop at Bancroft!

On February 10th, 11 college students from the Filipino Organization of Catholic University Students (FOCUS) visited our Bancroft Elementary after-school program for a dance workshop.  The FOCUS students choreographed a dance just for our students to learn.  Our students were very excited to learn a dance routine, and were very quick to catch on!

After getting on their feet and dancing the afternoon away (complete with a dance-off at the end with special moves!), they settled down with the FOCUS students to work on their homework and reading, while munching on some cookies made by FOCUS as a special treat.

Thank you FOCUS for coming out and volunteering with our students at Bancroft!

Mentor & Mentee Ice Skating Fun!

On Saturday, February 25th, 2012, AALEAD Mentors and Mentees had the opportunity to hang out by skating (..and slipping & sliding) on the ice rink!  Mentors & Mentees gathered at The Wheaton Indoor Ice Arena in Wheaton, MD to spend a couple of fun hours on the ice.

It was so good to see Mentors and Mentees spending time together.  And it was great to see Mentors chatting and mingling; and for a few, it was their first time attending an AALEAD event with their Mentee!

As the gusty winds blew outside, Mentors, Mentees, and a few of AALEAD Staff Members enjoyed skating in the indoor ice rink.  It was an awesome way in closing out the month of February!

Silly faces :P !

Cooking classes at SSP in 2012!!

Twice a month, we have cooking classes to teach the students how to prepare various meals. Learning how to cook has a direct impact on healthy eating lifestyles and  adds to student’s ability to become more independent.

On February 2nd, our SSP students tackled a complex chicken katsu and mashed potatoes recipe. Students were broken up into 3 teams and each team had 3 different items to prepare.  Students were responsible for creating a made from scratch natural jus, thyme and sage mashed potatoes, and a chicken katsu.  It was exciting to see each group experimenting with different flavors and helping each other out.  Each group had distinct style and flavors for their dishes. In one instance, a student realized that the natural jus was a bit on the salty side but managed to even out the taste by adding mustard to balance the flavor.  In the final presentation of the meal, the students had to opportunity to discuss what was challenging and surprising about the final results of their meals. They realized that the sodium in chicken stock needed to be diluted with water. The students had to be mindful of cooking temperatures to not burn the breaded coating and still cook the chicken evenly.  At the end of the class every plate was picked completely clean and the students walked away smiling and full!
