AALEAD is piloting a new photography workshop this year at Thomson Elementary School! Using donated cameras, students will see their surroundings from a new perspective while building positive self identity and learning responsible behavior. Students participating in the 4-week  workshop will check out a camera each day and work on a preassigned project. Project photos will be displayed each week and the students will learn to offer constructive comments to their peers. We need your help getting this program off the ground. If you have an older working digital camera collecting dust in a drawer, please consider donating it to AALEAD for use in this project!

Mail your donation to:  2100 New Hampshire Avenue, NW Washington DC, 2009

Or contact Micah Shearer,, 202-884-0322 ext 106,  to arrange drop off at one of our Elementary Schools or at our offices.

We had a wonderful first Friendraiser this past Tuesday, which took place at The Irene reception room in Chevy Chase, Maryland. The event was specifically held to benefit the DC Secondary School Program. Over 40 guests were in attendance to learn about our mission and hear compelling program experiences from our student representative, Nipa Islam. Throughout the evening, attendees networked while enjoying wine and delicious hors d’oeurves, courtesy of MeiWah Restaurant. Some of those highlights are documented in the photos below.

We want to particularly recognize the following guests for coming out to showing their support for AALEAD and the Secondary School Program:

2009 AALEAD Annual Dinner!

On Thursday, February 5th, 2009 AALEAD held its 10th Annual Dinner at China Garden in Rosslyn, VA. It was a full house packed with energy and excitement! The evening highlighted a keynote speech from Michelle Rhee, Chancellor of D.C. Public Schools.

AALEAD was able to take time to recognize our corporate sponsors, dedicated supporters, and special guests who also attended.

Our high school student emcees navigated the event for all of us!

The spotlight was on our youth in the middle of the evening! Stellar performances awed the audience as our youth showed off their talents in hip hop dancing, line dancing, Bollywood dancing, and a special solo voice performance of “God Bless the USA.”
