HIGH SCHOOL ASSISTANT PROGRAM COORDINATOR/AMERICORPS*VISTA (1 Position)

Position Description:

The High School Assistant Program Coordinator will assist AALEAD in curriculum development and implementation of a new after-school program in one Montgomery County High School. This coordinator will direct High School Site staff and volunteer tutors for effective student academic support.

The HS Assistant Program Coordinator is responsible for the following duties:

Curriculum Development (30%)

•Assist in developing a High School Academic Program

Program Management (50%)

•Assist in recruitment of High School Program students

•Assist in recruiting, selecting, and training volunteer tutors

•Coordinate logistics of program activities/field trips

•Serve as liaison to school administration and staff to update status of children/youth and program

•Serve as liaison to parents

•Work with AALEAD Family Strengthening and Mentoring Program Managers to improve parental involvement and community support in student's life

•Develop an HS Assistant Program Coordinator Handbook

Program Reporting (20%)

•Enter data into Efforts-to-Outcome database to measure changes in children/youth academics and behavior

•Assist High School Program Coordinator with program evaluation and grant reporting

•Assist the Director of Programs with additional tasks as needed

Qualifications:

•BA/BS in social science, education, social work, liberal arts, or related field

•Direct experience working with youth or teaching

•Good oral and written communication skills (public speaking experience preferred)

•Sensitivity to the needs of immigrant youth and families

•Organized and attentive to details

•Ability to work Monday-Friday schedule; flexibility to work some weekends, evenings, and holidays

•Fluency in any Asian language is a plus but not necessary

VISTA MENTORING ASSISTANT COORDINATOR

Asian American LEAD (AALEAD) is seeking a VISTA Mentoring Assistant Coordinator to help recruit mentors and mentees and assist with the overall implementation of the MD Mentoring Program. In this position, you will have a strong, positive influence on the lives of young Asian Americans and others!

The VISTA Mentoring Assistant Coordinator will:

•Support the Program Manager in providing outreach to Asian students and families to promote the Mentoring program in Montgomery County, MD

•Recruit new students into the mentoring program from Montgomery County schools

•Assist in recruiting, training, and retaining volunteers for the Mentoring Program

•Assist in dissemination and collection of Program evaluation forms

•Assist coordinating events and activities to inspire mentors to continue their efforts in helping children and the community

•Assist with administrative tasks which include creating PR materials, input assessments on Efforts to Outcome Database (ETO), ordering supplies, securing approvals, and performing necessary follow-up

•Support organizational Mentor-mentee events and activities

•Other duties as assigned by the Mentoring Program Manager

Qualifications:

•BA/BS in social science, education, social work, liberal arts, or related field

•Excellent interpersonal skills

•Sensitivity to the needs of immigrant children and families

•Experience with networking and event planning

•Fluency in an Asian language preferred but not required

VOLUNTEER MARYLAND COORDINATOR

The Volunteer Maryland Coordinator (VMC) will be responsible for recruiting and managing volunteers that will serve as tutors and mentors to students for after school programs sponsored by Asian American LEAD at Argyle, Eastern, Loiederman, and Parkland Middle Schools, and Einstein High School. The VMC will also recruit bilingual volunteers who will work with families on issues ranging from how to interpret a student’s report card to facilitating parent/teacher meetings. The VMC will focus efforts on recruiting a total of 25 new volunteers to assist with these programs. The VMC will work closely with program staff to screen and orient new volunteers.

This is an 11 month, full-time (40 hours/week) position as a member of the Volunteer Maryland (VM) AmeriCorps program serving at Asian American LEAD. Volunteer Maryland Coordinators (VMCs) are responsible for developing and implementing a volunteer program as agreed to in the VM site partnership negotiations that occurred in spring, 2009. The VMC service year will begin on September 16, 2009 and conclude on August 3, 2010

Benefits

Full-time VMCs receive a living stipend of $13,000, an education award of $4,725, and health insurance if they are not already covered. They may also qualify for a child care allowance. Other benefits include student loan deferment, professional training, valuable networking opportunities, working with a dedicated team of AmeriCorps members and staff, and making a real difference in a local community.

Duties

•Develop a written work plan and timeline for implementation.

•Recruit volunteers. Outreach methods may include: presentations to faith, business, and/or community groups; staffing information booths at community events; and utilizing the media.

•Update program materials as needed such as a policy and procedure manual, volunteer position descriptions, promotional fliers or brochures, and screening, training, and evaluation tools.

•Work with staff to screen volunteers as necessary; procedures might include interviews, reference checks, and criminal background checks.

•Assist with orientation and training for volunteers.

•Supervise volunteers; develop and implement recognition activities for volunteers such as special events, awards, gifts, etc.

•Maintain accurate records of volunteer participation.

•Evaluate progress made in achieving the program’s goals; report on progress in statistical and narrative reports for Volunteer Maryland.

•Develop community partnerships to support the volunteer program.

•Perform direct community service each week (up to four hours each week).

•Serve as public ambassador for the Service Site, Volunteer Maryland, and AmeriCorps.

•Participate in VM and AmeriCorps training, service projects, and other activities.

•VMCs may be assigned other volunteer program duties during the course of the service year by the Service Site Supervisor.

Selection Process

To participate in Volunteer Maryland, applicants must submit a written application. Staff will review the application, with special emphasis placed on the writing sample, invite the applicant to interview if appropriate, conduct two reference checks, and complete a criminal background investigation.

Enrollment Requirements

To serve in AmeriCorps, VMCs must be at least 17 years of age; have a high school diploma or GED; and be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident alien. Documentation of age, education, and citizenship are due on the first day of the service year.

Skills and Attitudes Necessary

•Skilled at taking initiative, problem solving, and working independently, to be able to develop and implement a volunteer program.

•Passion for working with youth.

•Skilled at building interpersonal relationships, to work effectively as part of a team (at the Service Site and with his/her class of VMCs), and to manage volunteers.

•Cultural sensitivity.

•Strong verbal skills, to communicate effectively with staff, volunteers, and community groups. Comfortable with public speaking.

•Skilled at written communication, to develop program materials and reports.

•Committed to the concept of national service and to making a difference in his/her community.

•Basic computer literacy, to be able to produce program materials and track volunteer hours. Graphic design skills helpful to create recruitment materials.

•Have own, or have access to, transportation to and from VM trainings, events, and Service Site-related activities.

•Able to respond to organizational change productively and maintain positive attitude.

Orientation and Training

Volunteer Maryland provides approximately 20 days of training in program development, volunteer management, marketing, communication, and leadership skills. Training is held the first two weeks of the service year, with monthly training days throughout the rest of the year. Additional training opportunities are also available through AmeriCorps and the Service Site. The Site Supervisor provides orientation to the VM Coordinator’s local placement site.

Supervision and Evaluation

The Service Site Supervisor provides day-to-day supervision. The Site Supervisor will evaluate performance in accordance with the agency’s policies. In addition, Volunteer Maryland’s Director provides overall supervision to all VM Coordinators, and evaluates performance at mid-year and at the end of the year.

Hours

Full-time AmeriCorps members are required to serve approximately 40 hours each week. At Asian American LEAD the office hours will be 9:00 am – 6:00 pm or 10:00 am – 7:00 pm Monday - Friday; evening and weekend work may be required from time to time to attend recruitment events. Volunteer Maryland training days are 10:00 am – 4:00 pm.

MIDDLE SCHOOL ASSISTANT COORDINATOR

The Middle School Assistant Coordinator will assist AALEAD in curriculum development and implementation of after-school programming in four (4) down-county Montgomery County Middle Schools. This coordinator will work to provide direct service to two (2) of the four sites and assist in managing volunteer tutors for effective student academic support. The Middle School Assistant Coordinator will be responsible for implementing AALEAD’s Maryland Jr. Youth Council and Academic Enrichment Programs in the schools they serve at. This coordinator reports to the Maryland Middle School Program Coordinator.

The MS Assistant Coordinator is responsible for the following duties:

Curriculum Development (20%)

•Assist in developing and improving the MD Tutoring Program and Jr. Youth Council, AALEAD’s first Service-Learning component

Program Implementation (20%)

•Implement Jr. Youth Council

•Implement Enrichment and tutoring programs

•Support AALEAD’s open tutoring program, to be held one day aweek at the Maryland office

•Conduct on site programs three days per week, from 2:30 to 4:30 pm, at Montgomery County school sites

•Assist in student supervision and travel logistics during field trips and off-site service learning opportunities

•Assist in all facets of AALEAD’s summer programming;

Program Management (40%)

•Coordinate, monitor and refine Middle School program curriculum/implementation, particularly logistics of all program activities/field trips

•Assist in recruitment of Middle School Program students across schools

•Assist in recruiting and selecting volunteer tutors;

•Supervise and evaluate Middle School volunteer tutors;

•Assist in management of school relationships;

•Serve as liaison to parents

•Work with AALEAD MD Family Strengthening and Mentoring Program Managers to improve parental involvement and community support in student's life
