The Development Associate of AALEAD is responsible for the management of fundraising systems related to grants (including private, public, corporate, and foundation resources) and individual donors (direct mail solicitation, fundraising events). The Development Associate will work with the Vice President for Development and External Affairs to design non-profit fundraising strategies and planning for the agency. As the primary staff member for grant-related fundraising, the Development Associate will oversee four areas of Development: (1) Research & Prospecting; (2) Proposal & Grant Writing; (3) Individual Donor Solicitation; and (4) Grant Reporting & Management.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Research & Prospecting (10%) - The Development Associate will work with the Vice President for Development and External Affairs to research and manage funding opportunities that are appropriate for the agency. Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

• Researching philanthropy and grant prospecting through a variety of sources;
• Designing and implementing an agency calendar with grant application deadlines; (and sub-deadlines).

Proposal & Grant Writing (60%) - The Development Associate will work with the Vice President for Development and External Affairs and appropriate staff members to research, develop, prepare, write, and submit grant proposals. Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

• Writing fundraising proposals, reports, and inquiry letters;
• Maintaining up-to-date descriptive language for use in proposals;
• Drafting correspondence such as thank you notes, cover letters and related documents.

Individual Donor Solicitation (10%) - The Development Associate will work with the Vice President for Development and External Affairs and appropriate staff members to establish, cultivate, and maintain positive and strategic communications with funding resources, contacts, and community/external relationships. Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

• Plan and coordinate all fundraising events;
• Write and coordinate direct mail solicitation;
• Manage and input donor data into fundraising database;
• Cultivate donor relationships (thank you letters, follow-up).

Grant Reporting & Management (20%) - The Development Associate will work to oversee the grant reporting and manage the actual writing process to ensure that AALEAD maintains positive relationships and timely reporting. Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

• Writing reports, consolidating report sections;
• Managing AALEAD staff participation for grant reporting, including meetings, calendaring, and editing.

Desired Skills, Characteristics and Experience

We are looking for a highly intelligent, results-driven Development Associate with excellent writing skill with an open and clear communication style. The ideal Development Associate will have some level of broad-based fundraising experience.

• A Bachelor degree in a related field
• Extremely strong analytical written and oral communication skills, including significant expertise with analytical and persuasive writing projects
• Flexibility, a roll-up-your-sleeves attitude, and a sense of humor
• Ability to work some evenings and weekends
• Experience with and sensitivity to communities of color, immigrant communities, and communities with limited resources

Salary Range

Competitive salary commensurate with experience (1.0 FTE)

After-School Program Instructors

Position Description

Teachers for after-school program in a DC elementary school must be able to supervise and work with a teaching assistant as well as manage a classroom of approximately 10 children. Other duties include lesson preparation, assisting with grant reporting, and building good relations with school staff and parents. The positions are approximately 20 hours per week for one year (August 2005 through August of 2006). Flexible scheduling options possible. Ideal for part-time graduate student.

Qualifications

• Bachelors in related fields
• Relevant academic and/or work experience, especially in education and youth development
• Strong organizational skills and professional ethics
• Sensitivity to the needs of refugee and immigrant children and families
• Speakers of Spanish, Chinese, Vietnamese, and Amharic strongly preferred. Must have enough fluency to interface with non-English speaking parents.
• Ability to thrive in a results-driven environment, and focus on improving academics of low-income students.

After-School Program Teaching Assistants

Position Description

Teaching assistants will help main instructors in after-school program in a DC elementary school. Must demonstrate initiative, ability to work with youth and manage a classroom, reliability, and self-reliance. TA's will help plan activities and supervise approximately 10 students. The position is about 15 hours a week throughout the length of the school year (Sept/Oct 2005 through mid-June 2006).

• Position is open to currently enrolled college students.
• Relevant experience, especially in education and youth development
• Strong organizational skills and professional ethics
• Sensitivity to the needs of refugee and immigrant children and families
• Speakers of Spanish, Chinese, Vietnamese, or Amharic strongly preferred. Must have enough fluency to interface with non-English speaking parents.
