Why Does Montgomery County need AALEAD???

  • In Montgomery County, MD, Asian Americans represent 120,000 out of the 740,000 with a projected increase to 170,000 in 2010. Asian Americans are just over 16% of the population.
  • In the Wheaton-Glenmont-Silver Spring area, the average Asian American per capita incomes was just 19,995 in 2000.
  • Montgomery County is the 6th wealthiest county in the USA per Census Data yet nearly 5,500 Asian Americans live in poverty with few linguistically and culturally-appropriate services available.
  • There are 906 Asian American students at Bel Pre, Broad Acres, Burnt Mills, Cresthaven, East Silver Spring, Galway, Glenallen, Harmony Hills, Jackson Road, New Hampshire Estates, Oakview, Strathmore, Viers Mill, Weller Road and Wheaton Woods Elementary Schools. 437 of them are low-income per MCPS data from 2004-2005. In other words, 48% of the Asian population at these schools are low-income.
