Volunteering opportunities at AALEAD include....

Mentoring:

The mentoring program at AALEAD matches children and youth with professionals helping them develop the academic and life skills necessary to succeed in school. This is a unique opportunity to develop and enhance young people's awareness of and belief in their own potential, and assist them with bridging cultures, academics, college choices, and other acculturation issues.

This highly successful program has been lauded by both mentors and mentees as a life-changing, deeply rewarding experience. There is no foreign language requirement to becoming a mentor, just the desire to make a difference in a child’s life.

Other Opportunities:

  • Become a teacher’s assistant
  • Facilitate extra curricular activities for children at the secondary level
  • Assist with special events
  • Become a board member
Tutoring:

Our Tutoring Program strives to:

  • Improve academic achievement of youths grades K-12 in DC and Maryland by closing learning gaps in math and reading so that students can succeed to the next grade;
  • Improve academic engagement through positive support and encouragement;
  • Create a safe sense of community for children to study after school.

Our Elementary Tutoring Program utilizes the curriculum developed by For Love of Children (FLOC) as a basic framework, focusing on 1-on-1 instruction and a holistic, hands-on approach to learning. We incorporate a combination of 1-on-1 and small group interactive learning activities to foster a sense of community and teamwork among students and tutors.

Tutors for middle and high school aged youth work in a combinaiton of 1-on-1 and group settings and are subject specific based on the students needs.
