Maggie has always found herself navigating the liminal spaces of her identity as a mixed-race Asian American. Raised in the rural Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, she struggled to find what connected her to Asian America outside of her family’s (and the town’s only) Chinese restaurant. Her search to find spaces where she could thrive in her identity was limited until she attended college at William & Mary. There she stumbled upon a small community that served more than just diversity and inclusion but a movement and solidarity: the Asian & Pacific Islander American (APIA) Studies program. Maggie’s education in APIA studies gave her affirmation in her identity that evolved into a drive to fight for those who are oppressed. She found passion in uplifting communities through leading workshops, organizing events, and creating bonds with her mentors and peers that continue to inspire her to this day. Maggie is so excited to continue this work with AALEAD where she can put her passion into praxis.
