Nyrene Monforte

MD Youth Facilitation Coordinator

Nyrene Monforte (she/her) is the Maryland High School Youth Facilitation Coordinator at AALEAD. She is a storyteller and arts educator interested in creating visions of an equitable world.

Nyrene first learned about the power of community education as a student at the University of Maryland. As one of the External Vice Presidents of the Asian American Student Union, she facilitated workshops and supported the Yuri Kochiyama Leadership Program, an annual mentorship program for DMV high school students.

Prior to joining AALEAD, Nyrene worked as a video producer for various newsrooms and a labor union to tell stories rooted in community-building and resistance. She’s reported on the community organizing to protect Eden Center, union strikes, and the legacy of a Filipino American newspaper. In 2025, she was part of the student team that won a Pulitzer citation for a nationwide investigation on police use of force.

Nyrene holds a B.A. in Journalism with a minor in Asian American Studies. She cares deeply about migrants’ rights, labor issues, and Asian American youth advocacy. In her free time, she supports Filipino grassroots initiatives, watches movies, and bakes pastries.
